Just in time for Finish it up Friday, my Sonoma Stars top is finished!!!!
A little back story: I started working on this in 2011 – a year before we started the Textile Mavens blog. I mentioned it in my first post: Quilt in Progress, and again in my 2nd post: The House That Fern Built,….. and then I went on to many other projects, pulling it out occasionally, taking it to at least two, maybe three, quilt retreats – feeling lots of guilt but little inspiration.
The original idea for my piece came from a quilt in Gwen and Freddy’s book Collaborative Quilting – Little House in the Big Woods. I made a version of it for my niece and decided to make a version for me.
The pure joy, satisfaction, and relief released from completing such a long work in process coalesced into a frenetic bit of creativity: In the pile of leftover green triangles, strips and pieces of dark blue fabric, I found an extra owl and moon. I made a background from the blue, added the moon, the owl and some trees. I placed the owl between the trees, peering down at the pairs of small animals running across the bottom – I’m calling it Night Watch.
Best of all, I included all of my stars and used up all but a 4″ by 46″ strip of fabric from my stash for the backs of both of these pieces!!
My reward for finishing you might ask!?!! Tomorrow I am attending a Kathryn Clark workshop sponsored by The East Bay Modern Quilters, part of this year’s annual Stitch Modern Quilt Show. Go see it if you haven’t – it closes on April 25th.
